Visually, Elysium is a gritty, ambitious sci-fi allegory about healthcare inequality, immigration, and class warfare. Matt Damon delivers as Max, a former criminal turned makeshift savior, and Sharlto Copley’s villainous Kruger is terrifyingly unhinged. Jodie Foster, though, is wasted in a stiff role.

However, the plot rushes from set piece to set piece, logic gaps appear (why not just build more medical bays?), and the heavy-handed messaging lacks the subtlety of director Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 .
